What is a Panchang?

A Panchang (also spelled Panchangam) is the traditional Hindu calendar and almanac. The word comes from Sanskrit: "pancha" meaning five and "anga" meaning limb. These five elements are Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar combination), Karana (half of Tithi), and Vara (weekday). Together they determine auspicious and inauspicious timings for daily activities, rituals, and ceremonies.

The Five Elements

Tithi

The lunar day based on the angular distance between the Sun and Moon. There are 30 Tithis in a lunar month.

Nakshatra

The lunar mansion or constellation the Moon is transiting. There are 27 Nakshatras in Vedic astrology.

Yoga

A luni-solar combination derived from the sum of the longitudes of the Sun and Moon. There are 27 Yogas.

Karana

Half of a Tithi. There are 11 Karanas, with each Tithi having two Karanas.

Auspicious & Inauspicious Timings

Each day has specific auspicious periods like Abhijit Muhurat and Brahma Muhurta, as well as inauspicious periods like Rahu Kalam, Yama Gandam, and Gulika Kalam. Knowing these timings helps in planning important activities, prayers, and ceremonies according to Vedic traditions.
