Yama Dvitiya

Observed on the second lunar day of the bright fortnight of Kartika, closing the Diwali sequence, when sisters apply tilak to their brothers' foreheads and pray for their long life while brothers offer gifts in return. The name derives from the tradition that Yamuna received and fed her brother Yama on this day, and he granted that brothers honored thus would be spared untimely death.
