Paryushana Begins

Marks the start of the most important Jain festival of the year, an annual period of intensified fasting, scriptural reading and self-purification kept during the monsoon retreat. The Svetambara observance runs eight days and includes the recitation of the Kalpa Sutra, while the Digambara Das Lakshana runs ten; both culminate in Samvatsari or Kshamavani with mutual forgiveness.
