Guru Poornima

The Ashadha full moon on which disciples honour their spiritual teacher, identified with the birth of Veda Vyasa who compiled the Vedas and Puranas. Buddhists observe the same day as the Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath, and Jain and Hindu ascetics begin the Chaturmas retreat.
