Gayatri Japam

Observed the day after Shravani Upakarma, when Brahmins who have renewed the sacred thread perform a mass repetition (japa) of the Gayatri mantra, traditionally 1008 times. It is treated as expiation for lapses in daily sandhyavandana over the past year.
